Taxidermist Wins World Title

North American Hunter

An outstretched cougar resides in the showroom of Critter Creations, a taxidermy shop in Chambersburg.

Created by Ashley Barrett, the big cat is lazily licking its paw. But it might as well be holding a trophy, as it is the piece that won Barrett the 2009 Masters Division Best In World, Large Mammal championship at the 2009 World Taxidermy Awards in St. Louis.

"I wasn't really sure what to think at first," Barrett said. "It was something once I got involved in taxidermy and started competing, that was my ultimate goal -- to be the best in the world."

The competition ran May 5-9. Competitors from across the globe arrived in the Gateway City armed with their best specimens in hopes of claiming a championship.

Barrett brought four creations: two separate cougars, a pair of bobcats and a coyote.
