Wyoming Taxidermist Places At World Championships

Cody taxidermist Dawayne Dewey enjoyed great success during the recent world championships.

Dewey was second in the World Live Taxidermy Sculpture category during the 2009 World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championships in St. Charles, Mo., in May.

“I enjoy going to the world championships and have had good success through the years,” he said. “This year I didn’t win a world title, but it was still good.”

Dewey said the category he entered can be challenging.

“They have a live event, and each competitor has 24 hours over three days to do their work,” he said. “The goal is to create a sculpture from scratch.

“You want to create something you can use in the taxidermy studio,” he added. “I was pleased with my work.”

Dewey’s winning sculpture was a bust of a Marco Polo argali sheep ram.

“Mine was a reproduction of an actual ram that was shot in the 1800s,” he said. “It’s unusual. They don’t usually get this big.
